Broadband and Moving Home

What happens to broadband when you move home? If you’ve lived in the same place for a while you may never have dealt with this, or perhaps you have done it before and found it only added stress to an already stressful situation.

To help make things go smoother on your moving day we’ll explain how to handle a broadband service during a house move, and how to improve the chance that you’ll get internet setup in your new home on the day you move in.

Before you move: contract terms, costs and notifying your provider

A little planning and forethought goes on a long way when it comes to broadband and moving home. Leaving this to the last minute could not only mean that you’re left waiting to get internet in the new home, it could also block the line for the occupant of your old property.

The first step is to get in touch with your provider and find out the following information:


  • Notification period


Find out how much notice the ISP requires for either moving or cancelling the broadband. 14 days is typical but each provider has its own policy.

  • Broadband availability


There is no guarantee that you’ll be able to keep the same type of broadband. You might find that your property does not have access to the same services, and if it does it’s likely that the speed will be different. Of course, it can go the other way and you may discover that your new home can get a faster connection. Ask the provider to check the new address, but also do some availability checks yourself using independent services so you have a full picture of availability at the new home.

  • Remaining contract term


Also find out how long you’ve got left on the contract. If you’re planning on cancelling mid-contract the early termination fee could be expensive. If you’re out of contract and keeping the same provider then check whether you’ll have to sign up to a new contract term in order to move the service.

  • Costs


At the same time you should also confirm whether there is any cost involved in either moving or cancelling.

Once you’ve got an idea of notification periods, availability and costs you can make a decision about whether you’re going to take the broadband when you move, or cancel and switch providers.

Moving your broadband service

Moving should be fairly straightforward: notify the provider in good time and they will aim to get your new line activated on the day you move in. Aside from maybe having to be around for an engineer visit, there is very little for you to do except plug in your router.

Assuming you have notified the ISP in time and there are no surprise technical hitches you should find that your old line will cease to function the same day the new service becomes active.

Cancelling your broadband

Cancelling broadband during a house move will require a little more attention on your part, because you’ll need to ensure that the new provider gets the broadband activated as close to moving day as possible.

When you’ve chosen a new broadband service contact the provider well in advance to find out how much time they’ll require. Generally it should not be an issue to get it activated on the move-in date, however during busy periods you may be left waiting for an engineer to attend.

As well as getting the new service up and running you’ll also need to contact the existing provider to arrange cancellation on the day of the move. As mentioned above, it’s extremely important to confirm remaining contract terms and costs so you’re fully aware of any extra expense.
