The Loire-Atlantique department was once a part of Brittany and, culturally, still is. It has a rich landscape of ancient forests, wide beaches and vast vineyards, which produce the infamous Muscadet wine. Nantes, situated on the banks of the River Loire was once the capital of Brittany but is now the capital of Pays de la Loire.
It has a number of well-maintained parks, intriguing museums and affordable restaurants and cafes. Together, these create a friendly city with a lively town centre. It is now the seventh largest city in France and the fourth largest port.
Access to the department is fairly easy. There are airports in Nantes and Rennes, both with regular flights from the UK. If you are travelling by train then the TGV will take you to either Nantes (1 hour away) or Angers from Paris. The nearest seaport is St-Malo, which can be reached from Portsmouth, Poole and Weymouth.
Local activities include: mountain biking, horse riding, hiking, fishing, quad biking, micro light flying, sand yachting, speed sailing and water sports.
With its well-kept cobbled streets, efficient tram system and a history of manufacturing such genteel staples as biscuits and berlingot (boiled) sweets, France’s sixth-largest city exudes a certain kind of bourgeois charm. Yet Nantes, which regularly tops ‘quality of life’ surveys in the French press, is anything but staid. Spirited bars and arty events, frequented by the town’s 45,000 students, keep the atmosphere lively.
Attractively situated on islands in the estuary of France’s mighty Loire River, the solid city of Nantes exudes an air of importance and historical significance. Although not officially part of Brittany any longer, this city has always been regarded as the Breton commercial and maritime centre, once a springboard for exciting colonial expeditions, shipbuilding and trading. Today it remains a wealthy industrial port, its architectural heritage reflecting its past achievements.
1.Nantes is the 6th largest city in France with over 280,000 inhabitants.
2.By 2010 there will be an additional 20,000 – 30,000 new inhabitants in the city.
3.50% of all inhabitants in Nantes live alone.
4.Demand for houses and apartments far outstrips supply, in 2006 only 829 new apartments were built within the central area.
5.Rental demand is still the number one priority (ahead of property to buy) and houses and apartments with gardens, parking, balconies and terraces rank the most sought after.
