In the northwestern region of Greece and southern Albania lies the beautiful coast of Epirus. A relatively large mass of land, the region extends from the Valona Bay in Albania to the Gulf of Arta. Meanwhile on its eastern side lie the gargantuan Pindus Mountains separating Epirus from Macedonia and Thessaly. From Epirus, one can get a glimpse of the lustrous rivers of the Piniós, the Aóös (vjöse), the Achelous, and the Aliákmon. Swift winds of the Ionian Sea can be felt throughout Epirus for much of it is adjacent to the windward side of the Pindus range. The region as compared to other regions of mainland Greece receives more rainfall due to its proximity to the Ionian Sea. Towering limestone ridges positioned at Epirus’s northwest extending far southeast reveal veiled valleys that are excellent for pasture while the northern façade of Epirus is rich with plains that are terrific terrains for cereal and wheat production.
