The name Villa Hollywood is apt, for this head-turning villa would not look out of place in Beverly Hills. It was indeed built (around 2006) on a hillside with stunning views, by an American couple with Californian verve and opulence, framed always in expensive good taste. The result is not only an outstanding family home, but the opportunity to own a top-end boutique-style Bed-and-Breakfast business - which it was, very successfully, before ill health forced retirement.
The harmony of light and space uplifts the spirits - there are no sombre corners here. This is especially evident in the vast ground floor open-plan sitting room - or, rather, rooms, because there are at least two distinct seating areas - plus dining area and state-of-the-art fitted kitchen. A wood-burning stove broadcasts its cheering warmth in the short winters, boosted if necessary by under-floor heating
Glazed doors lead out to the beautiful shaded terrace and D-shaped pool, surrounded by exotic vegetation - guests will feel like movie stars!
Also on the ground floor is a utility room/toilet, and a good-size bedroom with fitted wardrobes and quality furnishings, en-suite shower and glazed door to front terrace/car park.
Stairs lead up to a large landing, off which are two further en-suite bedrooms. One of these is very similar to the ground floor bedroom, also with fine furnishings. but the glazed door opens to a veranda and outside steps down - facilitating independent entrance.
The third (master) bedroom is more like a suite, of the kind for which you'd expect to pay an awful lot of money in a swanky hotel. It is very, very large, with vaulted ceiling; exceptionally well appointed (a piano would not look out of place); a TV lounge at one end and double bed at the other; a dressing room; bath/shower room; and big veranda with views that go on for ever.
All this stands at the end of a quiet country lane, only fields and forest beyond, a few other houses dotted around, at the foot of the lush green Serra da Lousa. The town of Lousa is a short drive or long walk, and has several supermarkets, restaurants, shops, health centre, lido and more.
Under construction (currently postponed) is a metro link to regional capital Coimbra, only half-an-hour by car.
In Beverly Hills this villa would set you back millions. Here it can be yours for rather less than a modest outer-London apartment.
