Artvin information, Turkey

Artvin Artvin, in Northeast Turkey on the Corub river near the Georgian border, is a lovely district that is home to picturesque views of nature. Scattered around this region are lush forests, mountains and lakes, plateaus and rivers, as well as traditional wooden houses. This city is home to many Georgians, Kurds and Lazes. Artvin was ceded to Russia, along with the neighbouring region of Kars at the end of the Russo-Turkish War that lasted until 1878. It was returned back to Turkey after the signing of a treaty at Brest-Litovsk in 1918. Artvin is also known as Coruh, from the Coruh Neri or Lazin, from Lazistan or land of the Laz. Ascending in a series of terraces facing southwest, Artvin clings onto a steep hillside just above the mouth of the Coruh gorge. Artvin is also an excellent starting point for forays into the countryside which is home to some of the province’s many ruined Early Christian Churches. These are often off the oft-trodden road, accessible only by foot or along dust-covered dirt roads.

The city of Artvin is an impressive, imposing city, thanks to its strategic location on a rock above the Coruh River. Going up here is a 5-km climb on a road that goes round and round up the steep cliffs. Houses and other real estate properties here will surely have a fantastic view, as the surrounding countryside is a landscape of thick forests, lakes, waterfalls, mountains and plateaus. So majestic is the view that one songwriter even the penned the lyrics “Not Paris my friend, see Artvin before you die!”

White-water rafting in the wild Coruh river and its rapids is just one of the many sporting activities in Artvin. The river indeed is perfect for adventure-lovers who brave the exciting rapids. The Tortum waterfalls, found along the road to Erzurum, is another attraction, albeit a calmer and more peaceful one. About 60 kilometers east of Arvin are the towns of Borcka and Savsat, as well as the lake in Karagoller.

Plateaus are also common in the region. Some of the most popular ones are Biblian and Kafkasor, where the Kafkasor bull-fight is held during its main festival. Artvin is also home to many historical and archaeological sites such as mosques, churches and bridges. There are ruins of castles built in the 1500s, as well as churches dating all the way back from the 7th century to the 10th century, such as the churches near the villages of Camliyamac, Bagbasi, Ishan and Barhal. Bali Bey Mosque is also a must-see. Other sporting activities include fishing, yachting and hunting. Visitors can rest their weary bodies after a long day’s activity in any of the city’s many thermal baths.

Artvin enjoys a rather wet climate, as it is affected by the nearby Black Sea. This makes Artvin an ideal spot for the cultivation of a wide array of fruits, hazelnuts, tea, vines and olives. Like most of the towns in Turkey, Artvin has seen the unstoppable rise of buildings, concrete apartment blocks and government office buildings. Still, Artvin has pretty much retained its quiet, indomitable spirit that has become its main appeal to both locals and outsiders.
