For many civilizations spanning across centuries, Adana was considered one of the most important commercial as well as cultural cities. Hanging across River Seyhan is the ancient Taskopru, or the Stone Bridge, which was erected by Hadrian and his men. At 300 yards long, the bridge can be considered a true accomplishment especially as it was built in the Roman times, when mostly everything was constructed by hand and using only crude materials. Visitors to the city will delight at seeing the 16th century Great Mosque, Ulu Camii, the Eski Mosque or the Yag, the Hasan Aga Mosque and the clock tower Saat Kulesi. It’s also worthwhile to take a side trip to the Ethnographical Museum where authentic Turkish swords, manuscript books and tombstones are on display. The building itself is fascinating, as it was a church built over a thousand years ago, during the time of the Crusades. Because it is surrounded by water, Adana also boasts of beautiful beaches, from the Yumurtalik to Karatas, which is located about 50 kilometers from Adana. In Yumurtalik there is even an ancient castle, which adds to the place’s tourism hotspots. Architectural wonders also abound in Adana. Located around the city are Roman remnants which include Misis, or the caravan routes that came from Persia, China and India and the elegant 4th century Mosaic representing Noah’s Ark. Atop the River Ceyhan are the ruins of a fortress, while at the Karatepe National park you will find the remains of the summer palace of King Asitawada himself, as well as tablets of Phoenician and Hittite inscriptions. Tourists must also sample the local cuisine. Adana is also popular for its delicious Adana Kebap, which is a delicious spicy tube of ground meat. Pair it with the salgam, a local beverage made from dark turnips or the sura, which is a type of grape juice. Because Adana also serves as the bridgehead on the trade routes of Anatolia, it has also become the center of the Turkish cotton industry, cement, agricultural machinery, manufactured textiles and vegetable oils. If you’re thinking about buying property in Adana, it would be a good idea to check out apartment style homes that afford breathtaking views of Adana’s lakes and oceans. Settling in one of these apartment style homes, which can range from about 20,000 euros plus, certainly affords you the chance to be in midst of a bustling city as well as a chance to be close to nature’s spectacular sights. « Return to Adana |
