The atmosphere of Picardie is one of tranquility and calm, with its soothing open fields merging into forests, and the hypnotic flow of its lakelands, canals and rivers. Its coastline is virtually unspoilt in its natural beauty, and is the least urbanized in all of France. Picardie’s main areas bear a truly rural and medieval flavor, each with a character all its own. Chambly is a beautiful gothic town with its imposing 13th century church built by Saint Louis King of France. The Bois Hardy Festival held here every March draws a crowd of revelers who come to enjoy the tradition of bonfire lighting. Compiegne is a town surrounded by a forest that used to be favorite hunting grounds in Picardie. It plays host to several different markets, and boasts the Chateau Compiegne, royal palace built for Louis XV and later lived in by Napoleon. Saint Quentin, a town steeped in art and architecture, with its Gothic styling and Art Deco buildings which are the best in all of Picardie, is home to a good number of museums, theaters, and performance venues. In contrast, Amiens, the capital of Picardie, has all the modern amenities of city living, a bustling university town with lively restaurants, bars, craft shops. Picardie’s waters and coast allow for a host of outdoor activities: windsurfing, land yachting, and sailing, along with the traditional and charming castle building. Property prices show signs of increasing, as demand is suddenly growing among the Parisians seeking second homes away from the capital. With this sudden interest, and Picardie’s major advantage in location, being so close to Paris, we can expect Picardie to gain popularity as a prime investment option as well as a solid choice for a place to call home. « Return to Picardie |
