Being an industrial region, Lorraine’s landscape is not as colourful and varied as the more picturesque rural areas of France, and has mostly flat and expansive agricultural plains. However, views can be spectacular from the Vosges Mountains, and the region has it’s share of vineyards and farmyards and the luxurious forests of Lorraine plateau to provide enough abundance of sights to enjoy. Lorraine’s historic capital is Nancy, a place with exceptionally refined beauty. Sophisticated and attractive, Nancy is an 18th century town that remains a fine example of baroque urban planning. It was an important center for Art Noveau, with an architecture that is certainly admirable. The rest of Lorraine offers many equally delightful discoveries. Metz, the region’s capital, is famous for its yellow limestone architecture and its exceptional gardens and parks. The whole region is a culinary hotspot, with the Quiche Lorraine earning highest regard as France’s most popular dish. Climate in Lorraine is a delight for season lovers. Summers are sunny and hot, and winters are snowy cold, with night temperatures reaching below 0. While not on the top of the list for tourists to France, Lorraine offers many delights to visitors and its charming medieval backdrop is a fine choice for those who would like to get away from crowds. There are a host of activities to find pleasure in: skiing, climbing, mountain biking, fishing, sailing and windsurfing are some of the more popular ones. It’s low popularity among tourists makes properties in Lorraine quite inexpensive. It is also a real bargain considering the low cost of living in the region. Travel to and from the region is easy owing to the good motorways. House sizes in Lorraine are also much larger than typical in France. « Return to Lorraine |
