Historical landmarks and ruins may be found all over many towns and villages of Haute Normandie. The entire Normandy province played a crucial role many times throughout history. Prominent during the Middle Ages when many fine abbeys and monasteries where built across the region, fought over and won at various times by both the British and the French during The Hundred Years War, when Joan of Arc was tortured and executed right here in the city of Rouen, and finally during one of the most significant encounters of the Second World War, as Allied troops landed here to initiate the liberation of Europe during the Battle known as D-Day. The landscape of Haute Normandie is a vision straight out of an artist’s canvas, with limestone arches and steep cliffs majestically lining the seaside, cattle grazing on the fine fields of green pastureland, rustic timber-framed houses, ruins of cathedrals and abbeys, and the very soft light of the River Seine. The climate in Haute Normandie is coastal and wet. Summers are warm and sunny but rains are occasional. Facilities and services exist for most outdoor as well as indoor activities. Hiking, golfing, horseback riding, cycling and fishing are popular diversions. The villages and towns of Haute Normandie offer many spectacular delights. Etretat is famous for its naturally formed limestone cliffs, and wonderful nighttime seaside views. Evreux has some of the most stunning gardens in Europe, as well as a 12th century cathedral with beautifully ornate stained glass windows. Fecamp is an art town, where one may visit the Maritime museum and the Museum of Art and Childhood, as well as the famous Benedictine Palais. Le Havre, rebuilt after being war ravaged with most of its historic buildings destroyed, is known as one of the finest example of Modernist architecture, and all over Haute Normandie, as with the entire province of Normandy, gourmets will delight in the gastronomic offers of its cuisine. Markets sell the finest in produce and the freshest catch from the sea, and in every block there are restaurants and cafés that serves sumptuous meals. Haute Normandie’s proximity to Paris, as well as the spectacular ocean and countryside views, makes properties here a very good investment. With its increasing popularity as a weekend retreat by many Parisians, prices are on a steady increase, but well worth it. Apartments average 65,000€ along the coast, while villas are at 16,000€. Truly, the charms of Haute Normandie and the pleasures offered by its towns and villages can bring many memorable experiences to residents and visitors alike. « Return to Haute-Normandie |
