Franche-Comte information, France

Located on the eastern side of France, bordered by Switzerland, with wonderful Lake Geneva on its southern tip, Franche-Comte offers “a slice” of Switzerland within France.

Known as France’s greenest region, its wide open spaces, and miles of forests, mountains, and valleys, along with a vast network of rivers and lakes, make Franche-Comte a refreshing sight to the city weary visitor. The climate is warm and sunny in summer, and can be quite cold in winter with heavy snow fall.

Relatively undiscovered, this region’s charm is nevertheless unmistakable. It boasts a Swiss influenced culture and cuisine. It is famous for its gruyere cheeses and locally produced sausages, with a slight hint of Swiss flavor. The capital of Besancon proudly bore the title of watch and clock capital of France in the past centuries.

Franche-Comte has few cities, and much of life here is outdoors and in the country side, where towns and villages provide a variety of interesting things to explore and do. The beautiful mountain range of Jura is a well loved cross country skiing spot in the winter, and favored grounds for hiking and canoeing in the summer.

Other attractions include the wine trails of Jura, best known for its “vin jaune”, the spa town of Salin les Bans, the gray stoned houses along the 16th century collegiate church of Notre Dame in Dole, the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire housing some of Rodin’s works in Belfort, and the carnival and chocolate festival in Delle. Not to be missed is the Lion de Belfort statue in Territoire de Belfort, created by Bartoldi (who also made the Statue of Liberty).

Good road and rail networks and transcontinental connections make Franche Comte easily accessible from the rest of France as well as Italy and Switzerland. Prices of properties are still reasonable, with apartments averaging 100,000€ in the major towns, and farmhouses averaging 30,000€ - 50,000€ in the villages.

Providing a great year round destination for visitors and second homeowners, with an incredible expanse of rural landscape and country charm, Franche-Comte can soon become a prime destination in France.
