The climate is mildly Mediterranean, with dry summers and rainy winters. The island of Corsica is surrounded by 600 miles of coastline with about 200 beaches. Dense shrub lands and diverse forests, as well as rare animal and plant species, also offer delightful discoveries for the ecotourist. Hikers come to explore the small villages built of granite in Alta Rocca or the pine forests of Zonza. Inland, the town of Ajaccio is a bustling and busy place. The Musee Fesch located here holds some fine treasures, and the Maison Bonaparte is a famous tourist spot. There are ancient Roman baths offering sulphurous waters in Les Bains de Baracci. Porto, declared a UNESCO world heritage site, has a well preserved old Genoese tower, and a breathtaking view of the Corsican sunset. It goes without saying that Tourism is the major industry in Corsica, but other industries also figure prominently in the region’s economy, including: food processing, fishing and wine making. While the island remains popular with tourists, development is rather slow, allowing Corsica to remain relatively unspoilt. The more popular tourist areas are Porto Vecchio, Bonifacio and Calvi. Of the three, property buyers flock to Porto Vecchio because of its accessibility to the mountains and the other major attractions of the island such as the gorges and the natural swimming pools of Fort d’Atonne. Buyers should consider the newer residential development areas for the good bargains they provide. Average price for a 2 bedroom apartment is 100,000€. Corsica’s pristine beaches and breathtaking seascapes along with its well preserved historic sites offer a comforting and comfortable alternative to city living, and most second home buyers will find real value in properties here. « Return to Corse |
