The weather is evenly temperate, but may sometimes turn from rain to clear skies in a few hours. Rugged and indented, with cliffs, capes, islands and reefs, Bretagne’s coastline is littered with small and charming fishing villages, offering a beautifully scenic sight. The seaside resorts and fishing harbours offer all the facilities for enjoying the sea, which is never more than a walk away. The best beaches can be found in the south, with large stretches of sand. Just as spellbinding is the inland scenery, mystic and mythical at the same time. Prehistoric megalithic monuments still stand near the town of Carnac and at other sites, built by unidentified settlers in 3500. The medieval town of Dinan, one of the oldest in Bretagne, stands atop a hillside overlooking a valley and boasts of a grand medieval church. The ancient walled city of St. Malo, with its cobbled streets and fine restaurants, is a major tourist attraction. Foret de Paimpont, once a primeval wood, is immersed in legend that claims its connection to Arthur and Merlin. Fishing, farming and tourism are the three major industries in the region of Bretagne. The lack of efficient energy systems has prevented further development of other industries, except for space and telecommunications. The capital of Bretagne is Rennes, which is also its largest city, a curious mix of the old and the new, with a portion of the old town still well preserved, alongside Parisian architecture that once tried to rival that of the capital. The atmosphere and lifestyle is more bohemian, as a fourth of the population is made up of students. Entertainment and leisure activities may be experienced at the various bars, bistros and restaurants as well as bookshops and museums. The influx of foreign buyers has raised the prices of property in Bretagne, but good bargains may still be found. The more expensive area is in the southern coast, while Central Bretagne offers the cheapest prices. Apartment prices average80,000€, with villas at 300,000€. Accessibility to Bretagne is good because of its proximity to ferry ports as well as the growing number of budget airlines servicing it. For those who wish a unique lifestyle in a region with plenty of charm and enduring traditions, Bretagne is a wise choice. « Return to Bretagne |
