Basse-Normandie information, France

Basse-Normandie The Lower half of the province of Normandy, Basse Normandie is a predominantly rural area in the North Coast of France, with the English Channel to its north and Upper Normandy to its east. Long stretches of golden sands and cliffs are found on its rocky coastline, while magnificent forests, luscious green fields and clear streams characterize most of its inland landscape. Basse Normandie provides one with a wonderful contrast of coast and countryside.

Sparsely populated, Basse Normandie’s sleepy towns are nevertheless delightful spots to visit. Caen, the region’s capital, the burial place of William the Conqueror, is a historical delight, with its medieval streets, ancient buildings and secret courtyards. Bagnoles de l’Orne is the legendary spa town, with a thermal resort that has been known for the restorative powers of its waters. Le Mêle-sur-Sarthe, with an imposing old church whose spires dominant its landscape, has a lake that is a very popular fishing venue, and dark rocks that attract climbers from all over. Lisieux, a very popular pilgrim town with a grand Basilica and some of the most stunning churches, boasts both the remains and relics of Saint Therese.

The climate is mostly warm and sunny, with only occasional rains. Outdoor activities abound, as facilities exist for most sports and leisure entertainment. There are theme parks and golf clubs, horseback riding lanes, fishing spots, rafting and canoeing areas, climbing and hiking trails, as well as museums, hypermarkets, and shopping boutiques.

The properties along the coastline are more expensive, with those inland offering better bargains. Apartments range from 60 to 80 thousand euro dollars, townhouses at 40 ,000€. Coastal houses average 100,000€ - 120,000€.

Demand remains high for properties in Basse Normandie, and second home owners find delight in the mix of attractions to be found in this region. Offering a mostly tranquil and serene lifestyle, Basse Normandie combines the best of seaside life with the warmth of rural countryside living.
