The climate in Auvergne is continental, with long, cold winters, and cool short summers. With such a climate, there are lots of outdoor activities that keep Auvergne a lively place. Fishing and rafting are popular activities, along with other water sports activities. Others take to trekking the many paths of the Auvergne Mountains to enjoy its rare flora and fauna, or mountain biking along the trails to see more of its landscape. In the winter, tourists flock to the more than 150 ski trails and enjoy downhill skiing, cross-country, snowshoes, dog sled teams, and other ski activities. The region of Auvergne can be considered a gastronomical delight. It is famous for its cheeses such as the Cantal and Bleu d’Auvergne. Local dishes, such as the soufflé-like pounti, offer new experiences for the palate. A huge contrast to the natural landscape is offered by the more than 500 Romanesque churches and 50 chateaux in the region. Added to that, it may be noted that the region has a very strong business and industrial area in its capital of Clermont-Ferrand, lending a highly cosmopolitan flavor to the region. Potential residents will be pleased at the efficient transport and communications infrastructure of Auvergne, which has made it very favourable to growing and sustaining businesses. This can probably account for the very low unemployment rate in this area, making it one of the strongest regional economies. It should also be noteworthy that Auvergne has, in contrast to its highly industrialized cities, some of the loveliest villages, Haute-Loire being one of them. A fine blend of both the comforts of city life and the bounty of nature make Auvergne a prime property investment. Wide open spaces allow a very extensive agriculture, with about 60% of Auvergne devoted to this industry. Aside from promoting the economy of Auvergne, such endeavor has allowed the region to protect its most valuable resource. Among other things, Auvergne is known for the quality of its agricultural products, passing the highest standards of inspection.Along with a vibrant agriculture, other industries that are solidly grounded in Auvergne include Pharmaceutics and Health, Rubber and Plastics, and Electronics. With less than 10% of the entire region urbanized, Auvergne will definitely still see growth in the years to come. « Return to Auvergne |
