Aquitaine information, France

Aquitaine Pristine white sand beaches along the west coast, and the stunning view of the Pyrenees on the south, make Aquitaine a tourist treasure spot. Located in southwestern France, Aquitaine is bordered on the south by Spain and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. Historically significant, Aquitaine was named by the Romans who were impressed by this “land of waters”. Aquitaine passed on from Roman rule to British kings before finally becoming part of France. It is a prized region, being one of the largest in the country.

As its name implies, this area has abundant waters: countless lakes and three huge rivers, and the longest stretch of coastline in Europe. Weather here is mild the whole year through, almost similar to the Mediterranean. Plenty of sunshine make its beaches enjoyable most of the year, and in winter, the Pyrenees mountains provide skiing venues for tourists and locals alike. Activities in the region are definitely varied, from sailing and surfing, to cycling and hiking, to bird watching and horse riding.

Aquitaine is also a nature-lover’s delight, with its well protected environment and a diversity of flora and fauna. Nature preserves abound, like the Marais d’Orx Nature Reserve found in southern Landes. Villages found in the salt marshes maintain a culture and a way of life that remains unaltered by time. The three main attractions and most popular spots in this region are the areas of Bordeaux, Dordogne and the coastline.

Bordeaux is the capital and the main city of Aquitaine, and is famous for its excellent wines. There is splendid architecture to be enjoyed in this place, and one may take a balloon ride to appreciate the palatial mansions and wine estates as well as the sprawling vineyards. Wine tasting is very popular here, as even the finest wines may be had for very reasonable prices.

Dordogne has what many would call the most beautiful river in France. Aside from its famous landmark, this place contains wonderful caves, medieval towns and chateaux making it a long time popular destination by Britons. All across the region are many colorful local traditions to discover and summer festivals to visit. The Bayonne Fetes is very famous, where crowds flock to enjoy bullfights, races and bandas, among other things.

Prices of properties in Aquitaine remain reasonably affordable but are certainly prime hotspots for would be investors. In the past, travel to Aquitaine was difficult, hindering the growth of prices in this region. With cheaper airlines travelling to the region now, however, things are bound to pick up for real estate in Aquitaine. Apartments along the coast start at 150,000€ and villas are at 200,000€.

A region with proud roots and a strong culture, colorful scenery and diverse activities, Aquitaine deserves consideration as a noteworthy place to be part of.
