Salamanca information, Spain

Salamanca Bordering the provinces of Avila, Caceres, Vallodoid and Zamora in Spain is the local province called Salamanca. In the westernmost side of the province can be found the neighboring country of Spain---Portugal. As of the latest population count, there are about 350,000 people who call Salamanca home. Up to half of the total villages are interestingly having less that 300 inhabitants. The province has about 12,300 square kilometers of land area.

The prevailing climate in Salamanca is dry. All throughout the year, the skies are always blue and the sun is up and shining. Rainfall is on the average. Like most provinces in the country, summers are very warm and noticeably dry. However, cultivation and farming of grain crops is still very ideal and productive. That is because most parts of Salamanca can rely for irrigation from the Tormes river. The river flows from the water reservoir of the Gredos Mountain, which is located in the province of Avila.

The local textile industry is alive and very much thriving in the municipality of Bejar. The textile products from the area are known to have good and exportable quality. The municipality is also a good place where hunting activities can be done. Both local people and tourists are enjoying hunting for deer, hare and other wild animals in the vast wilderness. Because of the flowing river, fishing is also an income generating as well as a recreational activity. Several water sports are also popular in the area.

The capital city of Salamanca serves as home to about half of the total population of the province. Still, the city is not too crowded and there are still plenty of land areas to be developed as urban or population centers. Salamanca city is a promising site for a promising and popular real estate industry. There are a handful of property developers that are accelerating the development of possible urban and residential centers. Commercial purposes for land assets is also very much welcome in the city.

The city of Salamanca is considered one of the most popular Renaissance cities in all of the European region. The old sandstone edifices have been popular and have been exquisitely glowing like golden structures. Thus, local folk refer to the city as the golden city or in Spanish terms, La Ciudad Dorada.

The many historical and breath-taking old buildings helped the city earn the title of being a European Culture Capital. That is a significant factor why the province has a very active and thriving tourism industry. As a matter of fact, the tourism sector has been identified as among the main economic activities in the city. Annually, the city government recognizes tourism as a great and reliable source of income.

The academe is also highly regarded in Salamanca. One of the most popular and credible universities not just in the country but also in Europe is the renowned University of Salamanca. The university was established in 1218 by Alfonso IX, from Leon. The university has been recognized a center of excellence for the study of civil and canon laws.
