Leon information, Spain

Leon In the northwestern part of Spain can be found the very fertile land of Leon. The province is surrounded by other local provinces like Ourense, Asturias, Palencia, Lugo, Zamora Valladolid and Cantabria. Agriculturists and farmers find Leon a very ideal area for cultivating many types of crops. Aside from the rich topsoil that can be found, the soil is also nourished and made really fertile by the help of three rivers that are flowing into the province. Those rivers are Sil, Sella and Esla rivers.

The Picos de Europa and Cantabrian mountain ranges in the north of the province and the Leon hills located in the west serve as good and geographical borders that make up the good mountain scenery. The province is not in any way adjacent or touching any sea body like the Mediterranean or the Atlantic, but the flowing rivers in it are more than enough to make the province the trout capital of the country. The rivers and other small water body forms have crystal clear waters that are considered and are actually very much ideal for fishing trout. That is the reason why Leon folk are good at cooking and inventing many dishes for trout. As a matter of fact, there is a yearly week-long cooking festival that annually is held to commemorate trout cooking, International Trout Week.

Prevailing climate is just fine. Weather in Leon is usually dry, but at the same time, can get cold especially during winter. During winter, many winter activities are done. Winter sports are popularly conducted and held regularly at the Pajares and San Isidro, where various types of ski activities and lifts can be facilitated and found.

The capital city of the province is called Leon, which is actually biggest of the 21o municipalities that can be found within the province. Many monumental and historic structures can be found in Leon city, including the Gothic Leon Cathedral and Real Colegiata de San Isidro. Casa de Botines and Leon Museum of Contemporary Art are also famous for a number of tourists that regularly flock the area.

Of course, the tourism industry in the province is very much alive. Many people visit Leon for its numerous extravagant fiestas, of course aside form the many historic landmarks. The feast of the Easter Sunday is usually the most well celebrated and commemorated feast in the province. Many tourists come to observe and participate in the feat.

As for religious observations, the Semana Santa also stands out. During the occasion, or more popularly known as Holy Week, the ‘Procession of the Meeting’ is done. There is a dramatization and symbolic parade representing and re-enacting the meeting of St. John the Apostle, Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. Good Fridays, like in all other Catholic countries, are spent in total solemnity.
