Illes Balears information, Spain

Off the coast of the western Mediterranean Sea could be found the Illes Balears or more popularly known as Balearic Islands. The archipelago is near the eastern side of the peninsula of Iberia. Illes Balears forms an autonomous Spanish region, hence, there is an independent provincial government that takes care of various official businesses of the island.

Nothing much is remembered about the history of Illes Balears. However, few historians and scholars note that the early inhabitants of the islands were said to be nudists, not in the negative connotation of the word. It is said that the early Phoenicians entered the islands and introduced the concept of clothing to the islands’ natives who wore only sheep skin and plant leaves that time. In the long run, the name of the islands referred to the nude nature of folk, and through the centuries, the words spread and evolved to become what is known today as Illes Balears.

Illes Balears is known for having a very good climate. It is natural because the islands are located in the middle of the Mediterranean, where strong wind currents are expected. The islands could provide a great escape for people who are sensitive to the freezing climates of winters. In Illes Balears, average temperature comes only at 14 degrees Celsius.

Because of the physical and geographic features of the Illes Balears, there are numerous leisure outdoor activities that are conducted and done. Deep sea fishing would be on top of the list. The waters of Illes Balears are so abundant and overflowing with various types of fishes that if you love sea foods, you would find the islands as a haven.

Game shooting and hunting can be done within the forests in the islands. Other leisure activities are facilitated like target shooting, motor racing, hiking and other simple sports activities. If you want to take longer and healthier walks everyday, doing so along the coasts and the outskirts of the streets within the major cities and urban centers of the islands would be a great activity.

The islands of Formentera and Ibiza are the most popular of all the islands of the Illes Balears. As a matter of fact, the two are also among Spain’s most popular. Ibiza is considered as one of the world’s most in-demand and frequently visited tourist spots.

The local folk mostly speak Catalan. Majorca and Minorca are the other significant islands. The archipelago has Palma de Mallorca as its capital city. Within the islands can also be found several urban centers that truly signify how the raw form of locations in Spain are well adapting to modernization.
