The Canary Islands of Spain has seven interesting and different islands. Each island differs from one another in terms of unique features and sizes. In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the Canary Islands boasts of an island located southwest. El Hierro is Canary’s smallest island. Also called the ‘Meridian Island’ El Hierro is known among old Spanish people and tourists as Isla del Meridiano. Historically, El Hierro is significant for Europe and for the rest of the old Western world. That is because the island served as a prime meridian, or an imaginary boundary line in the map that distinguishes and separates the east and west. In the past, the old Europeans have described the island as significant because it was a reference point that would separate the east and the west on the globe. That is because El Hierro was the furthest to the west European territory in the old world. The name El Hierro was said to have been derived from the Spanish word hierro that means ‘iron’. You could infer why the island was called as such. From afar, the island could be seen as a little piece of iron floating in the sea. It could also be due to the different iron products that can be abundantly produced in the area. Like almost all islands in the Canary, El Hierro is also a bit mountainous. Having a small area of just 278 square kilometers, there is a mountain range that has a highest peak of about 1,501 meters. The mountain range is located right at the center of the island. Because El Hierro is undoubtedly a beautiful island, it is just natural that there are thousands of tourists that come to the island all year round. The climate of course is very tropical, good for skin tanning and other beach activities. The vegetation around the island is also good and the breeze is so cool from the sea and from the down slope wind currents from the mountain. As an independent island, there are various natural resources that are wisely and efficiently put into good use. El Hierro is set to become the first ever island not just in Spain but all across the world to be fully energy self-sufficient. Spain’s tourism authority says that soon, the island would not only be visited by tourists for recreation, but also for information. It would be a good reference point and observatory area to see if islands could really sustain to be independent in terms of energy supplies. The energy generation project in the island would be using wind farm facilities and two water reservoirs for hydroelectric production. The island’s real estate industry is growing robustly like its tourism sector. There are many property developers that are starting to eye sites and assets within the island. Because of El Hierros’ exquisite natural beauty, property investors would surely be lured to purchase assets and properties in the island. El Hierro is a really promising real estate site. « Return to Hierro |
