Paphos information, Cyprus

Paphos Paphos was once the capital city of Cyprus during the reign of the Ptolemies, successors of Alexander the Great. During those times, its harbour was one of the Mediterranean’s busiest ports. For more than seven centuries, Paphos remained as Cyprus’ capital city. It was one of Rome’s most important cities under the rule of the Roman governor Sergius Paulus who was converted by St. Paul into Christianity in AD 45. The entire Paphos area is filled with archaeological and historical treasure that dates back even before the Roman Empire.

Paphos is locatedin the west of the island of Cyprus and is the site of the island’s second busiest international airport. Close to the Paphos Port is the fishing harbour that is teaming with taverns and open-air cafés which serve a menu of the day’s catch.

Legend has it that the goddess Aphrodite was born on the shorelines of Paphos. There are several landmarks of Aphrodite in Paphos. Ahrodite’s birthplace is marked by chunky, rugged stones known as Aphrodite Rocks or Petra Tou Romiou. Aphrodite’s evocative sanctuary is located at the village of Koulkia. The Fountain of Love or otherwise known as Fontana Amorosa is located a few miles into the Akamas Peninsula. The town’s name, Paphos, is the name of the daughter of Venos and Pygmalion.

Paphos has so much history in it that UNESCO added the town to its World Cultural Heritage List. There are several treasures that were discovered. Some of them are the mosaics inside the Houses of Dionysius, Aion, and Theseus. These mosaics have been preserved under the soil for more than sixteen centuries. There are also the mysterious caves and vaults such as the Tombs of the Kings. There’s also the Pillar which is believed to be where St. Paul was mercilessly tortured. The ancient Odeon Theatre, the Byzantine Museum, and the District Archaeological Museum are some of the other tourist attractions.

The village of Geroskipou is a five-minute drive from Paphos. It is where the five-domed Byzantine church of Ayia Paraskevi can be found. For several years now, the village is still well known for its special delight, loukoumi.

Another beautiful tourist spot is the Ayios Neophytos Monastery. It is famous for its Enclosure or Encleistra which is believed to be carved out of the mountain by the hermit herself. It boasts of the wonderfully crafted Byzantine frescoes of the 12th and 15th centuries.

There are numerous reasons why Paphos is an ideal place to buy property or invest in real estate. Paphos has the best seaside climate that entails summers that are not too hot, mild winters, and low humidity. Generally, the region has unique air of holiday charm and elegance because of the classical buildings. Paphos is gifted with a relaxing nature with all the crystal-clear seas and silky-sanded beaches, lusciously green environment, and awe-inspiring landscapes. Plus the people’s extraordinary hospitality, Paphos is your family’s idea of a perfect place to call home. Search property for sale in Paphos with EuropeanProperty.com
