Ever since the Crusaders ruled Cyprus during the Middle Ages, Limassol has been a popular trading center of wine and sugar cane. It was in the Square Keep where they fostered the oldest named wine in the world, Commandaria. At present, Limassol has a population of over 155,000 and is Cyprus’ center for winemaking as well as an important tourist and commercial center. Cyprus is famous for its exceptionally great wine and Limassol is the home of all of Cyprus’ wineries. With a coastline that stretches for ten miles, Limassol has become an excellent sea resort. It has a busy shopping center, and countless restaurants and taverns. The city has a nightlife that should suit anyones taste from modest to sophisticated. Major economic growth started when Limassol developed its large citrus and vineyard plantations. Amiantus ore from the Troodos Mountains is one of the city’s major exported goods transported to the port using aerial cableway. Limassol is Cyprus’ "city of fun" as the Cypriots would call it. This is because Limassol is the home of the world’s most famous wine festival. Every year during the last ten days of September, Limassol would open its wine barrels to the world. In the spring, a carnival parade with hundreds of parties around the city is held during a weeklong celebration. Tourists come to visit Limassol during July and August for the internationally acclaimed Dance Festival at the Garden Theatre. Limassol has a typical Mediterranean climate. It has long, dry and hot summers. There are mild winters with brief spring and autumn seasons. There is plenty of sunshine during the summer months with a temperature which can soar to uncomfortable levels, but the gentle sea breeze from the Mediterranean sea can help cool of the heat on the coastline. Autumn is the best time to visit Limassol when the days are hot and the nights are quite cool. It is rare to see a crowded beach in Limassol even though swimming is greatly recommended. Holidaymakers come to visit Limassol during the springtime. Temperatures can warm up during April. Even with the cloudy and wt winter months, the coastal resorts remain mild and pleasant. During the months of December and January, the nearby Troodos Mountains can become colder with snow showers. Limassol Castle, Yermasogia dam, and the Salt Lake are just a few of the many popular tourist destinations in Limassol. Tourists can view the Cyprus Medieval Museum, the Folk Art Museum, the District Archaeological Museum, the Municipal Gardens, and the Municipal Art Gallery inside the historical Limassol Castle.
