Larnaca information, Cyprus

Larnaca The town of Larnaca is located on the southeast coast of Cyprus on the edge of Larnaca Bay. Its seafront is lined with palm trees and bustling with taverns, cafes, bars, and shops. There’s a breathtaking historical fortress castle which the town has converted into a summer cultural center. The towns close proximity to the luxurious hotels developed along beautiful sandy beaches and to the international airport make it a popular vacation spot for tourists. Larnaca also known as Khittim or Kition is based on a legend that tells of the story of Noah’s grandson, Khittim, who first settled on where the town is now located. However, the name Larnaca might have come from the Greek word Larnax which means sarcophagus discovered in the Larnaca Bay.

The peak of the town’s success lies in an ancient city kingdom which was established by the Mycenaean Greeks in the 13th century BC. The town enjoyed the position of being a rich seaport as well as a major copper trade center. There have been remains of that period that were excavated in the recent years which can be seen in the town’s complex of Mycenaean temples and Cyclopean walls at the ancient Kition site.

Larnaca is the birthplace of the stoic philosopher Zeno, founder of the Stoic Scholl. It is also the second home of St. Lazarus. St. Lazarus arrived in Larnaca after his resurrection and became its first bishop. The Church of St. Lazarus still stands in the center of the town and is a very popular tourist attraction. Under the sanctuary is the tomb of the patron saint of Larnaca, St. Lazarus.

Larnaca is much smaller than the neighbouring towns of Limassol and Nicosia. Larnaca only has a total population of 62,000 and still manages to maintain a leisurely and relaxed atmosphere. Zenon Kitieos Street is the town’s main shopping area. It is a characteristically busy road lined with small shops and a brilliantly colourful vegetable and fruit market close to the far end.

Close to the wonderful Palm Trees Promenade is a salt lake. Thousands of migrating birds rest here during the winter migration. On the tranquil edge of the lake is a famous Muslim pilgrimage place called Hala Sultan Tekke. This place ranks right after the Shrines of al Aksha, Medina, and Mecca in Jerusalem. The Feast of Kataklysmos or the Festival of the Flood is a famous annual celebration in Larnaca. It is marked by feasting, water sports, singing and dancing.

Summer in Larnaca is a season of high temperatures and cloudless skies. However, the sea breeze provides a pleasant atmosphere for the tourists. The hottest month ranges from 21°C to 34°C and the coldest months between 7°C and 15°C. During the winter season, there are some rain and rare quick-melting falls of snow. The place has high sunshine duration. In January, there are six hours of bright sunshine throughout the daytime.
