Plovidiv is situated on the two banks of the Maritsa river in the central part of Upper Thrace, nestled in between seven hills and connected by six bridges. It is locarted 150 km from Sofia, the capital city of Bulgaria. Its location had brought about dominant political and cultural influences from East and West civilizations and is considered as one of the oldest towns in Europe like Rome, and Athens. There are two towns in Plovdiv known as the Old Town Stariyat Grad (or The Old Town of Plovdiv) that occupies the three eastern hills in the Tracian Plain and was erected by Bulgarian master builders during the 19th century. Every lovely house built in this part of the town has its own style and beauty. Oak gates, green yards, large bay windows and marble fountains make these buildings a touch of class, which is the reason why most of these houses are now museums. The other part of the town is the lower town spread in the plain below that offers dynamic sights and entertainment. Aside from the Old Town of Plovdiv, there are still more than 200 archeological sites to see that include the Roman Theatre and Stadium. The Roman Theatre lies in the heart of the Plovdiv city center. Also known as the Ampitheater, it was built in the 2nd century AD and has around 7,000 seats. As of this time, the Roman Theatre is used to showcase stage plays and musical presentations, usually held for a small fee only. The Stadium, on the other hand, is among the largest Roman structure that has the shape of a horse shoe with over 30,000 seating capacity. Like the Ampitheater, the Stadium is also one of the Roman remains in the city that are still being maintained and preserved so that future generations will get to see these wondrous historical landmarks. Another significant historical landmark that can be explored in Plovdiv is the Djumaya Mosque, one of the oldest and biggest mosques in Bulgaria. If shopping is what you are looking for, then Plovdiv has several huge hypermarkets that you can choose from. Metro, Kaufland, Billa and Praktiker,to name a few. The central street is considered the main shopping area, with a lot of cafes and restaurants open to serve every curious customer.
