Gabrovo was said to be established by a young blacksmith named Racho, where close to his fireplace grew a hornbeam or Carpinus plant (Gabar in Bulgarian) and so the name ‘Gabrovo’ was born. It was dubbed The Home of Humor and Satire on April Fools Day in 1972 in homage to their local comical traditions. The place grew from a village to a town, gradually developing economically, spiritually and culturally. At the end of the nineteenth century, Gabrovo was the centre of industry and most of the region traded in mostly leather and textiles. Emerging here were various factories, joint-stock corporations, and connections to the stock-exchange were secured. It earned the town the label, “The Bulgarian Manchester”.
