Dobrich is a town with a population of 100,000 and located in Dobrudzha Plateau, Northeast Bulgaria. It lies 37 km away from the Romanian border. This town is known as the biggest grain-growing region of the country. It is considered the ‘capital’ of the ‘fertile land’ of Dobrudzha. The town was named by the people in honour of their Bulgarian leader during medieval times, Dobrotitsa. During World War I, it was conquered by Romania and was only returned in World War II when the Bulgarian army was finally able to penetrate. It was named Toulbuhin for a period of time from 1949 to 1991 then it was renamed as Doborich, it is also called Doboritch.
Dobrich has a temperate continental climate. The average annual temperature is 10.5oC while in summer the temperature doesn’t usually exceed 30oC. Bulgarian is the major language in this town but most establishments like resorts, hotels and restaurants speak English, German, French and Russian. Most of the population is Orthodox Christian while others are Muslims. The Bulgarian Church is headed by a Patriarch. The main economy of the town comes from the grains that they produce. They produce wheat, barley and maize.
