Blagoevgrad is the administrative centre of the Blagoevgrad Province. It is located in southwestern Bulgaria and lies on the banks of thr Blagoevgradska Bistritsa River. It has a population of about 85,543 as of 2007. Blagoevgrad was named after the founder of the Bulgarian Communist Party, Dimitar Blagoev. The city is situated in the valley of the Struma River, about 100 km south of Sofia (capital of Bulgary), close to the Greek, Serbian and Republic of Macedonia borders. Because of this, it is unmistakably the economic and cultural center of southwestern Bulgaria. The main language spoken is of course Bulgarian, but in most resorts, hotels and restaurants English, German, French and Russian are also spoken. It has a temperate continental climate which marks the different seasons. The average temperature is 10.5oC, in summer the temperature rarely exceeds 30oC. Blagoevgrad is best known because of its two major universities: the South-West University “Neofit Rilski”, where teacher training and humanities are given importance and the American University of Bulgaria founded in 1990. This is the reason why it is considered to be the educational capital of Bulgaria. Balgoevgrad is best known because of The “Pirin Mountains”. This is part of the Blagoevgrad region which has a scenic geographic location. The place is surrounded with mountains, glacial lakes and rivers with rich flora and fauna making it a great place to visit, especially in Winter for all the winter sports available. You should also visit the Bodrost resort which has over 30 mineral springs with a water temperature of up to 55oC. Blagoevgrad’s downtown area has preserved its 19th century architecture. It now houses a wide array of resteraunts, cafes, coffee shops and boutiques. Looking for more tourist attractions? Visit the Rila monastery which was founded in the 10th century and the Rozhen monastery while in Varosha, Orthodox Church is a nice site. Melnik showcases its wine and other natural sites like the cliffs with pyramidal shape and architecture. Blagoevgrad has a clean and quiet community.
