Tyrol used to be known as the “land in the mountains” before it was given the name Tyrol because almost the entire area of Tyrol is covered with Alps. It is bordered by the Otztaler Alps and the Bavarian Alps. There are more than 700 mountains with heights of over 3000 meters found in Tyrol. The southern half of Tyrol was granted to Italy while the north and east of Tyrol remained in the possession of Austria after the World War 1. Tyrol has a rich history.
