Lower Austria information, Austria

Lower Austria Niederösterreich or Lower Austria is dubbed ‘The cradle of Austria’s history’. Among the 9 federal states of the country, Lower Austria is the largest. Geographically speaking, Lower Austria is situated in the east of Upper Austria. It is just named thus because it is located on the Danube’s lower part. The Danube flows through Lower Austria from west towards the east. Lower Austria is about 7,400 square miles. Its northern border is Czech Republic, eastern border is Slovakia, southern border is the Styria province and its western border is Upper Austria. From Vienna, Lower Austria is easily reachable as it is practically sitting on Vienna’s doorstep.

Lower Austria is also a state known for 60% of the country’s grape harvest. Grapevines can be seen in Wienerwald’s rolling hillsides all through Wachau’s terraces. Through the province, you can take any of the ‘wine routes’ and shop at cosy taverns, taste local vintages, and enjoy Lower Austria in general.
